Circular Economy in Meru
The circular economy concept in Meru County emphasizes the significance of minimizing waste and optimizing resource use through sustainable approaches. This involves reusing materials, recycling items, and reducing the ecological impact of waste. Local efforts encompass raising awareness on circular economy amongst the community as envisaged in the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Act, 2022; encouraging and enforcing waste separation at source; supporting sustainable agricultural practices; and encouraging enterprises to embrace circular economy strategies. The aim is to foster a sustainable and resilient economy that serves the interests of both individuals and the environment. Along this line the County has planned to establish Material Recovery Facilities with an intention to decommission the existing dumpsites. The County is also pursuing inter-county partnerships as well as with private sector to promote circular economy.
