Conservation of the County's fragile ecosystems

Under this programme, the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change in Meru County aspires to protect and conserve all fragile ecosystems in the County. Key among the actions is to map all springs, wetlands, riverlines, swamps, and marshy areas in the County; undertake ecosystem-specific conservation actions; restore the degraded landscapes; and build the community's capacity to conserve and protect these vital resources. Over the last three years, through the efforts of the Directorate and partners such as PACJA, Netcare, and the County Green Champions, Kanyenje Springs in Abogeta East Ward (South Imenti Sub-County) was effectively restored. We now have adequate water from the springs, with a properly constructed fetching bay that ensures low or no contamination.

Restoration of Kanyenje springs:
Abogeta East Ward

In Collaboration with NetCare, local community and PACJA, Kanyenje springs was fully rehabilitated using an all inclusive approach. The local community was mobilized and it identified the spring as the long serving source of quality clean water for domestic use in the area. Due to encroachment and farming activities by the neighbors to the spring, the water was continuously getting contaminated and reduced threatening the lives of the local residents. By a locally-led resolution, the community has totally restored the spring doubling its discharge output and the neighbors taking responsibility as the the trustees for the water on behalf of the community.

FLLoCA-funded rehabilitation of Kanyuango Springs in Nyaki East - North Imenti

In replication of lessons learnt in rehabilitation of Kanyenje Springs, Kanyuango Springs is set to be restored under the Climate Change Resilience Investment (CCRI) in 2024-25 funding. The project aims to protect an endangered public spring which has bee a source of quality clean water for the community since time immemorial. It shall involve fencing, restoration of flora using water-friendly species as well as water conservation structures to avoid erosion and contamination of the spring.
